Thoughts on 2020 Ambassadors

What an amazing week! Seeing 30 plus individuals come together as a team to deliver not one, but two successful events in the space of two days will take some beating. It was a great achievement to be able to gain an understanding of a complex concept and to be able to present it to critical audiences in such a short time period. It demonstrates what can be achieved with good team work, concentration, hard work and commitment.

I would like to see this "can do" attitude taken forward to future projects both at a local and international level with successful ambassadors from Brunel grabbing the opportunities on offer to enhance cv's and put to good use their considerable talents.

You are the first of many. You can act as serious multipliers for the power of 2020. Go out and do it!

Each large company has a 'social responsibility fund'. We should tap into this arm of companies. Not for the momentary value but for the expandable links into these companies that can make serious change!

I think it is very important for the education system in the UK to place more emphasis on the importance of learning other languages. Even though many countries teach English from an early age it is still important for young people who have English as their mother tongue to take an interest in learning languages to improve communication around the world and to aid their career prospects.

We need loads of support to make this happen. Do something worthwhile. Engage young people in helping the growing populations to create solutions for poverty

I suggest that you have a clearer blog/ website for "outsiders". I wasn't entirely clear on the goals of 2020 Education until I came here.
Think of how many more could be involved through a clearer website!

The success of Asia House

Day 4
At 4pm yesterday, after a travelling to the centre of London we arrived at Asia House. All we could say was wow. The high decorated ceilings and intricate staircases make the venue look very grand and would make our presentation seem very professional. We were filled with a renewed sense of purpose as we prepared the room and our speeches before the guests arrived.

At 6 the guest started arriving and we all started to greet them and tell them about 2020 education. Everyone pulled together from the receptionists would greeted guests and gave them their name tags to the catering staff who kept the guest well stocked with drinks and snacks.

The presentation theme was the past, present and future and was presented by Abdul, Becky, Gulwali and Josh. They presented very professionally and even improvised and recovered well when there was a slight technical hitch. Colin Greenwood from Radiohead and children from Heathfeild School also contributed brilliant inputs to the presentation, which went a long way to convince the guests to sign up.

After the presentations there was more time for networking and mingling with the guest. The feedback was very positive and everyone worked the room and spoke the majority of the guests, working on their future business and ambassadorial skills. Abdul Jawula particularly shone in the room with his golden suit made from Ghanian cloth.
I went round interviewing people for a video blog.

Overall the evening was a great success and everyone, especially Patrick and Martin deserve a big round of applause and well all deserved our Pizza Hut dinner and a good sleep.

Setting up the showcase

The whole team has been in full flow since 7 a.m. setting up the hall for today's 2020 Education Showcase. A real sense of excitement and high energy.

The Impossible Task? Part 1- Asia House

Day 3
Today was where the hard work began and the real reason why we're here and to put our practical skills into practice.
We would be in charge of organising two events, one at Asia House in London and one at the university campus. We split into two groups and voted for who would be the project manager for each group.
The people chosen were:
ASIA HOUSE
Project Manager - Patrick Wilmott
Assistant Manger- Martin Townsend
UNIVERSITY SHOWCASE
Project Manager- Isha Blake
Assistant Manager- Josh Whitehouse
They were in charge of splitting up their group into teams to cover all the jobs needed.

Tomorrow we would go down to London and present to professionals and schools at Asia House, this includes presentations, and opportunities for networking. As young ambassadors we have to convince our guests that they should hep us to change our future. We need to convince them to believe in our cause and help in any way they can.

Lisa Ye, part of the Asia House welcoming team said that she wasn't daunted by the task because of, 'the sharing of responsibility and the excellent organisation skills of the manager.' Her job role involves greeting guests, giving them what they need for the evening and giving brief introductions to the 2020 programme.

Another young ambassador is Luke Munday of the Catering department, his work experience in hotel catering makes him the perfect candidate for the role, although he said that, 'if this was at school, I wouldn't have volunteered, the 2020 scheme has helped me to meet like minded people and try new things.'
All ambassadors are working hard to make the event a success tomorrow.

Team building, treasure hunts and taking risks

Hello, my name is Naomi and I'm a guest blogger and journalist for the 2020 Education Showcase at Brunel University 
Day 1/2 
When all the young hopeful students arrived they had no idea what they were getting themselves in for but they were willing to take the risk and be a part of a wonderful opportunity that could change the future of education for the better. 

The main focus for the first day and a half was to get the students to get to know each other and find out about their task for the week. Knowledge of the people around you is a vital life skill that helps to learn about other cultures and can lead to new innovative ideas and experiences. 

This was achieved through learning together but also in more fun and interesting ways. A drink down the local social club can be a great way to learn new life stories and find out about cultures that you never knew existed before. 

Treasure hunting is not just reserved for pirates and kids clubs, it can also be a great way to get people to work together and recognise skills in others. We were grouped off into teams and sent to explore the campus, taking the most creative pictures of certain landmarks that we could. The team I was part of was called Vertigo ( for the apprentice style cheese) and all of our pictures featured a giant rubber duck. It was a great way to get to know more people and find out what others are good at and how they can contribute to the programme. 

It's only the end of the second day and I've spoken to almost everyone on the course, they all have a different story to tell and I look forward to hearing more of their ideas as the week progresses.

As I sit in bed thinking of all that we need to do, I get that excited feeling it will all be worthwhile when you see these inspiring young people in action.

The ambition

The training course and showcase events over the next week will be a big step for 2020 Education. More schools will be involved. More projects will be promoted. More people will know about the programme. But most important of all, this is the time when we really start to bring young people to the centre stage. 50 young ambassadors will be trained, and over the next year they will play a leading role in promoting 2020 Education to schools, the media, VIPs and other young people. Their energy will give us the power to move forward.
