Project blogs of 2013

As you know 2020 Education has been very active in 2013. Here is a list of all the Projects and their blog links.

Our first project of the year was the Starting Points conference. The aim of the Starting Points Project is to develop successful and sustainable partnerships in order to develop future projects together.

The themes will be employment, enterprise, career skills for young people, and how to bridge the gap between formal (school) and non formal education. We will consider how to use the different parts of Youth in Action, and how to organise good 2020 Education projects together.

The aim of this project is to develop a European Citizenship project for youth leaders, project supervisors and youth workers, Main objective is to develop a youth workers toolkit around inclusion, european involvement, citizenship, democracy and non-formal education methods for work with young people The project involved 16 youth leaders, project supervisors and youth workers coming from the 8 countries Romania, Bulgaria, Finland, United Kingdom, Greece, Turkey, Estonia and Italy

This blog was a guest 2020 blog created by Casper Worthington who on the 6th of April 2013 went to French Guiana to see the launch of the newest Ariane 5 series rocket! Find out more

This was a Youth in Action training programme for future 2020 education international group leaders.

Inclusion In Action was held at Doncaster College For The Deaf it is an opportunitiy for professionals from across Europe to engage with disability by working with Kelford & Hilltop Special Educational Needs Schools. Participants are from UK. Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Norway, Romania, Turkey and the Ukraine

A week long programme which started in July with partners from Austria. The aim is to explore inclusion issues

Part 1 of the programme is to film a large scale talent show (and show on two large screens) at a concert venue with over 1000 guests. The media team will work with students to support them to work on a 5 camera live mix. All training will be given prior to you working with the students.

Part 2 for those participants who are more business minded there will be an enterprise element where students work with the leadership participants to create small enterprises over two days and the products will be sold at the live event at the S-Factor marketplace.

In 2013 the Youth In Action programme comes to the end of of its cycle, it will be replaced by Erasmus+ in 2014. In a bid to celebrate Youth In Action the Janus Project aims to bring people from 36 European countries together in London to evaluate the impact of Youth In Action and create a network for new Erasmus+. This is going to be big, powerful and changes the lives of many young people over the next few years. Follow the projects journey leading yp to the event...

The main objective of "Georgia On My Mind" is to empower young people of both nations, using two main methods. (1) Workshops and discussions on issues including youth rights (millennium development goals), empowerment, active citizenship, EU enlargement, the Youth in Action programme and intercultural understanding. (2) Practical exercises, training and workshops to help young participants broaden their horizons in terms of the value of skills and competencies gained through volunteering and how to better present themselves in their CV's and job interviews.
A consistent theme running throughout the programme will be gaining an understanding of the natural environment and how we can look after the planet, showing that green industry will be a growth area in the future European economy. Since half of the participants are from UK urban areas, a special effort will be put on the value and utility of manual work and careers in craftsmanship. This is an employment sector that is not attractive to some young people but offers many opportunities to less academic young people.
First Time Europe is designed to be the participants’ first experience of international youth projects, an opportunity to learn about another culture and to find out more about the European Union in general.
Business without borders is a a 3 country project exploring business and enterprise across Europe  The countries involved are UK, Turkey and the Ukraine. The project runs over a 2 year period.
Inclusion TV is a course for professionals wanting to learn about inclusion in practice, share experiences and develop new partnerships. Taking place in Austria it is supported by AK Tyrol and the Youth In Action national agencies from Germany and Austria. The event is run by www.momentumworld.org
Building new 2020 partnerships and exploring non formal education in Portugal is a theme for this programme
Stargazy is a boat renovation project based in Cawsand, Cornwall

The ‘Star Gazy’ initiative has a proven potential opportunity to give a small group of young people facing significant challenges the chance to learn some new, practical skills at the same time as developing their appreciation of being citizens in a wider Europe.

20 youth workers and 120 youngsters from 6 countries will be trained to be multipliers for active citizenship on local level, with global horizons, and develop participative activities in local youth work, relying on the values of inclusion, diversity and sustainable development, in the framework of an international network of learning support.

Reflections

When you look at what is takes to run a big event it amazes me what was achieved at the 2020 Ambassadors training event 2013. They ran 2 large events back to back as well as focussing on other 2020 education issues.

These two events were overwhelmingly successful and helped boost the profile of 2020 Education. The showcase event had a 4 camera live filming team, a pop up radio station, live bloggers, tour guides to take guests round our "journey of 2020 education" art installation. Presentations from schools and young people and I felt very proud this was all the work of young people who had only known each other for 3 days. It shows what is possible when the mind becomes focussed.

So it gives me great hope for the success of 2020 Education in the future and as I reflect on the 4 corner stones to which I measure success, I can tick them off one by one:

  1. Was the project educational - Yes
  2. Did the project involve active participation - Yes
  3. Was the project inclusive - Yes
  4. Did the project empower young people - Yes
Well done to the staff team who facilitated this process but even bigger well done to the young people who proved once again we should not underestimate young people in their abilities to make things happen.

Thoughts on 2020 Ambassadors

What an amazing week! Seeing 30 plus individuals come together as a team to deliver not one, but two successful events in the space of two days will take some beating. It was a great achievement to be able to gain an understanding of a complex concept and to be able to present it to critical audiences in such a short time period. It demonstrates what can be achieved with good team work, concentration, hard work and commitment.
I would like to see this "can do" attitude taken forward to future projects both at a local and international level with successful ambassadors from Brunel grabbing the opportunities on offer to enhance cv's and put to good use their considerable talents.
You are the first of many. You can act as serious multipliers for the power of 2020. Go out and do it!

Great to speak with guests who have such great projects in the pipeline! Touring with Mr Wolff is the highlight of my week!

Heinz Wolff

I am 85! I admire the initiative of these young people in 20/20 and wish them luck with identifying worthwhile projects.

Each large company has a 'social responsibility fund'. We should tap into this arm of companies. Not for the momentary value but for the expandable links into these companies that can make serious change!

Food

I like bon-bons.

^ That's right guys! If you're anywhere near Brunel University, come and join us in the Sports Hall for our showcase event. If you write a blog post, we'll give you a delicious bon-bon!
Raise awareness of the event, invite more schools/ uni's etc...
Some amazing projects, very helpful and inspiring.

Conor Sherry

Fantastic event at Brunel today and at Asia House last night. Very inspiring to see so many positive and inspirational young people in one place wanting to make a difference.

Chris Bradford

I think it is very important for the education system in the UK to place more emphasis on the importance of learning other languages. Even though many countries teach English from an early age it is still important for young people who have English as their mother tongue to take an interest in learning languages to improve communication around the world and to aid their career prospects.

Population

We need loads of support to make this happen. Do something worthwhile. Engage young people in helping the growing populations to create solutions for poverty

I am a tour guide

hi guys I'm touring this thing and making people see what we're doing here and its super cool! plus there is sweet so that's always a bonus! hehehe

Maddie the tour guide... keepin' you updated since 1 o'clock! ;)

Dalton McHugh - Netherthorpe School

Great opportunity for young people to make the world different for themselves,  for others and for the future of others.

Netherthorpe school

It's a well worth while organisation to be involved with and as a team we've had such a good time working with everyone! were looking forward to starting our own project!!

Suggestions

Love the vision at 2020 Education!
I suggest that you have a clearer blog/ website for "outsiders". I wasn't entirely clear on the goals of 2020 Education until I came here.
Think of how many more could be involved through a clearer website!

Support

We support 2020's vision to equip tomorrow's influential people with the skills and motivation necessary to make a difference.

AVISHA- TEAM 2020

2020 is the beginning vision of change; both nationally and globally. One day people from everywhere will be talking about this powerful movement which began small but succeeded in growing large.  Support us and you can say you were there with us from the start.

Anon - visionary

Brilliant to see young people being encouraged to not only be independent proactive learners but also the strength of mutual collaboration!

Beckie Corner

I think that it is really important that individual projects work together to make a bigger difference as a whole. Not only would this give the projects greater recognition, but also support and opportunity for funding.

Anon - 2020 Ambassador

The 2020 program has been a fantastic experience! Not only has it brought me together with a fantastic group of people from all backgrounds but has also really inspired me after learning about the superb projects currently taking place in the country. I have loved my time here as an ambassador so far and can't wait to get more involved.

Tour guide Maddie is on the scene and loving it

Marcie - Ambassador of 2020 Education

I believe we can change the world by combining our forces internationally and creating a brand new revolution of chance, hope and opportunity.

Rowan- 2020 education

"I found the mobile garden project very inspiring as the founder decided that he didn't want to sit back and let his sister in laws new restrictions stop her from gardening, which is something she loved."

Nicholas - 20 20 education

Just met the team leading the Bridport and Srebenica young cultural leaders  project - - what a great model for 20 20 - can we find other schools and groups interested in working with other cities around the world that are also engaged in reconciliation and building a better future? We can work with Bridport to help them find other cities, communities and schools to work with.

Showcase event blogging

Today we're putting on the Showcase event in the Brunel University sports hall
People will be blogging on this account and sharing their views and opinions about the 2020 experience and global problems in 50 words or less

The success of Asia House

Day 4
At 4pm yesterday, after a travelling to the centre of London we arrived at Asia House. All we could say was wow. The high decorated ceilings and intricate staircases make the venue look very grand and would make our presentation seem very professional. We were filled with a renewed sense of purpose as we prepared the room and our speeches before the guests arrived.

At 6 the guest started arriving and we all started to greet them and tell them about 2020 education. Everyone pulled together from the receptionists would greeted guests and gave them their name tags to the catering staff who kept the guest well stocked with drinks and snacks.

The presentation theme was the past, present and future and was presented by Abdul, Becky, Gulwali and Josh. They presented very professionally and even improvised and recovered well when there was a slight technical hitch. Colin Greenwood from Radiohead and children from Heathfeild School also contributed brilliant inputs to the presentation, which went a long way to convince the guests to sign up.

After the presentations there was more time for networking and mingling with the guest. The feedback was very positive and everyone worked the room and spoke the majority of the guests, working on their future business and ambassadorial skills. Abdul Jawula particularly shone in the room with his golden suit made from Ghanian cloth.
I went round interviewing people for a video blog.

Overall the evening was a great success and everyone, especially Patrick and Martin deserve a big round of applause and well all deserved our Pizza Hut dinner and a good sleep.

Setting up the showcase

The whole team has been in full flow since 7 a.m. setting up the hall for today's 2020 Education Showcase. A real sense of excitement and high energy.

The Impossible Task? Part 1- Asia House

Day 3
Today was where the hard work began and the real reason why we're here and to put our practical skills into practice.
We would be in charge of organising two events, one at Asia House in London and one at the university campus. We split into two groups and voted for who would be the project manager for each group.
The people chosen were:
ASIA HOUSE
Project Manager - Patrick Wilmott
Assistant Manger- Martin Townsend
UNIVERSITY SHOWCASE
Project Manager- Isha Blake
Assistant Manager- Josh Whitehouse
They were in charge of splitting up their group into teams to cover all the jobs needed.

Tomorrow we would go down to London and present to professionals and schools at Asia House, this includes presentations, and opportunities for networking. As young ambassadors we have to convince our guests that they should hep us to change our future. We need to convince them to believe in our cause and help in any way they can.

Lisa Ye, part of the Asia House welcoming team said that she wasn't daunted by the task because of, 'the sharing of responsibility and the excellent organisation skills of the manager.' Her job role involves greeting guests, giving them what they need for the evening and giving brief introductions to the 2020 programme.

Another young ambassador is Luke Munday of the Catering department, his work experience in hotel catering makes him the perfect candidate for the role, although he said that, 'if this was at school, I wouldn't have volunteered, the 2020 scheme has helped me to meet like minded people and try new things.'
All ambassadors are working hard to make the event a success tomorrow.

Team building, treasure hunts and taking risks

Hello, my name is Naomi and I'm a guest blogger and journalist for the 2020 Education Showcase at Brunel University
Day 1/2
When all the young hopeful students arrived they had no idea what they were getting themselves in for but they were willing to take the risk and be a part of a wonderful opportunity that could change the future of education for the better.

The main focus for the first day and a half was to get the students to get to know each other and find out about their task for the week. Knowledge of the people around you is a vital life skill that helps to learn about other cultures and can lead to new innovative ideas and experiences.

This was achieved through learning together but also in more fun and interesting ways. A drink down the local social club can be a great way to learn new life stories and find out about cultures that you never knew existed before.

Treasure hunting is not just reserved for pirates and kids clubs, it can also be a great way to get people to work together and recognise skills in others. We were grouped off into teams and sent to explore the campus, taking the most creative pictures of certain landmarks that we could. The team I was part of was called Vertigo ( for the apprentice style cheese) and all of our pictures featured a giant rubber duck. It was a great way to get to know more people and find out what others are good at and how they can contribute to the programme.

It's only the end of the second day and I've spoken to almost everyone on the course, they all have a different story to tell and I look forward to hearing more of their ideas as the week progresses.

Arrivals

Arrived at Brunel University what a great campus

On the way down...

We picked up our van for the week and look what they gave us! A van with a flashing light used for fixing motorways. Amy is changing her job!

The ambition

The training course and showcase events over the next week will be a big step for 2020 Education. More schools will be involved. More projects will be promoted. More people will know about the programme. But most important of all, this is the time when we really start to bring young people to the centre stage. 50 young ambassadors will be trained, and over the next year they will play a leading role in promoting 2020 Education to schools, the media, VIPs and other young people. Their energy will give us the power to move forward.
